PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE BETWEEN MCCAIN AND OBAMA 2008

100_0143

This evening I watched the debate between Barack Obama and John McCain. All in all the debate seem to be a wash for me. I don’t think either person won the debate, and I think the people that actually lost with the news media that were standing by a score pad in hand hoping to see a fight and then rule a winner.

There do not seem to be much of a fight between either candidate. They definitely didn’t seem to like each other, and barely could seem to stomach the thought of looking at each other on stage. The lack of civility between both candidates actually struck me as a turnoff for both candidates.

Where I come from, even when you engage in a debate with a person, you can at least remain civil with them, and respect your adversary during the debate. Now I actually grew up in Illinois and didn’t just adopt the state. I grew up reading biographies about Abraham Lincoln who practiced law in my hometown of Metamora Illinois.

When I compare those stories and that history with two candidates I saw this evening, I realized that as a country we are in pretty rough shape. It’s true that we have traveled far and survived a great deal over the last couple hundred years. But if our evolution can be measured by the quality of the presidential candidates that we can generate, it would seem that we are regressing backwards not forwards.

There are things about both candidates that I like, but there are many things about both candidates that I do not like. This evening, I learned of a new dislike that I have for both of them, when they exhibited an inability to be diplomatic with each other on stage. When I say that, I don’t mean the barbs and insults that they tossed each other’s way.

Instead, I refer to the body language, and the fact that neither of them could look at each other and engage in a dialogue with each other face-to-face. I think this hurt their presidential appearance, and made both men look small. Furthermore, in this modern age of TV, neither candidate did very well at looking into the camera. I grew up in Metamora, just across the river from Peoria Illinois. Ronald Reagan went to college in Eureka Illinois, which happens to be in the same county as Metamora.

It’s 2008 in its 28 years since Ronald Reagan set the bar for presidential demeanor during a debate. I do not suggest that you have to agree with Ronald Reagan’s politics, however his communication skills were indeed excellent and as Americans we should demand that our candidates exhibit that same level of communication skill.

Whether Barack Obama or even John McCain who purports to consider Ronald Reagan one of his political heroes, learn that valuable lesson taught to the nation 28 years ago, the lesson that stage presence matters when you’re communicating not just to a moderator and not just to the debate opponent and not just to an audience in a university, but when you’re communicating to the entire nation of the United States and indeed the entire world watching on TV.

In this regard both candidates fail the test tonight, and this is one of the first clear signals that I’ve seen that neither candidate is prepared to be president of the United States.

Show Me The Money You Sexist Pig! :)

utterz-image
If we can all agree that money talks and bullshit walks, I have a story to share with you.

First, Let’s Play a Game.

No, not Global Thermalnuclear Warfare, not even tic tac toe.

Let’s play a quick guessing game.

These first questions are solely meant for calibration:

1. Could an outsider view equal pay for equal work by looking at the total number of women on a Presidential Candidates governmental staff compared to the total number of men in order to determine a number balance in the ratio of males to females?

2. Who would be least sexist, a person that hired more women for senior positions than men or a person that hired less?

3. Who would be more sexist, a person that had a majority of women on their staff or a person that had a minority of women on their staff?

4. Who would be more sexist, a person that paid women more on average than men or less on average than men on their staff?

5. Who would be more sexist, a person that had a higher total salary for women on their staff than men, or a person that had a higher total salary for men on their staff rather than women?

OK, now for the real guessing game. First, some warm up questions…

1. Before any Female Vice Presidential Candidate was announced, which Presidential candidate stated publicly in a major speech that women should get an equal days pay for an equal days work?

Answer - Barack Obama during his Acceptance Speech! (Yeah!!! Obama, Obama, Obama, Obama!!!)

Next Question . . .

2. Which Presidential candidate actually chose a woman to be a Vice Presidential Running Mate?

(hmmmm, McCain - but that was just politics right? <– insert crickets chirping –>

Easy Questions are Over, let’s get real and see where the money is.

3. Which Presidential candidate has more women working on his Senate Staff in total numbers?

(hmmmm <– insert Jeopardy music here –> )

4. Which Presidential candidate has more women serving in senior positions on his Senate Staff?

(hmmmm , hint hint hint its the same person as in number 3)

5. Which Presidential candidate pays women on his staff more on average than he pays the men on his staff in total salary?

(hmmmm , if you are a smart test taker and noticed a trend already, stick with that trend to score higher)

6. Which Presidential candidate has more women on their staff than they have men on their staff?

Bonus - Which candidate has the least? (Tip! If you think you got 6 right, go with a different name for the bonus answer, otherwise choose the same name if you are not sure, and you’ll at least get a little credit)

7. Which Presidential candidate pays more total budgeted salary to women as opposed to men on their Senate Staff?

(hmmmm, - last hint, its the same person as in number 3, 4, 5, 6, but not the bonus question)

Provide your responses, and I’ll share the answers with you soon!

Biden Opens Door to Exit & Usher in Hillary

Just yesterday, I was stating that if Barack Obama wanted to win, he needed to stop making the decision to invest in Joe Biden, sell short and invest in Hillary.

The conventional wisdom is that once you choose your VP, you have to stick with that choice. That’s conventional crap, not wisdom.

If you have a sports team or an army or a business team that is not matching up well against a competitor, you make a change in your line up to meet the new challenge and you proceed from there.

Obama/Biden are very poorly matched against McCain/Palin.

If Obama wants to win, he needs to change the game (just like McCain did when he picked Palin) and find a graceful exit for Joe Biden and a magnificent entrance for Hillary Clinton.

Obama is no dummy, but the question is whether or not he is stubborn. I’ve known a lot of smart people that never could get past their own pride and hubris. Obama is meeting with Bill Clinton Harlem today. If Obama is smart, he will be talking with Bill about how to do this.

Now, personally I like Joe Biden. He’s not only a smart guy, but he does not suffer from an over developed sense of pride nor does he seem to be afflicted with hubris.

He can also see the writing on the wall. Obama/Biden is going to lose to McCain/Palin.

Biden knows that the outcome of this election is more important than himself and I think this is why he called it like he saw it when he said that Hillary would have been a better choice than himself.

This is remarkable as he is already standing up to his potential boss Barack Obama and telling him that the emperor is running around bare assed right now, and he better cover himself before election day gets here. That’s not something Edwards had the ability to do 4 years ago and not even something Lieberman was capable of either.

Biden is cut from a different mold, and can see that if Obama doesn’t make the switch soon, this race is going to be over unless Democrats get very very lucky, but that’s not likely to happen. When’s the last time Democrats got lucky?

Palin Sound as Good as She Looked at RNC?

Last night Vice Presidential Nominee Sarah Palin gave a great speech. If you did not see the speech on TV, I would like to get your opinion on how the speech ’sounded’.

A number of news and political pundits made a lot of wag the dog claims about the staging of the speech from the inclusion of her family in the audience (typical of all conventions and candidates) to almost everything else about the setting.

So this is just the audio of the speech. I’m curious how the speech sounds to first timers or how it even sounds to people that saw or heard all or part of the speech.
