Libertarian Party selects Bob Barr as 2008 presidential nominee

Former Congressman plans to take the White House as Libertarian candidate

Denver - The Libertarian Party has nominated former Congressman Bob Barr as its candidate for president for the 2008 election.

“I’m sure we will emerge here with the strongest ticket in the history of the Libertarian Party,” Barr stated in his victory speech shortly after being selected as the Party’s nominee. “I want everybody to remember that we only have 163 days to win this election. We cannot waste one single day.”

More than 650 Libertarian delegates met in Denver from May 22 till the 26 for the 2008 Libertarian National Convention. After six rounds of voting Sunday afternoon, Barr was selected as the Party’s presidential nominee.

“We’re proud to present to the American voters Bob Barr as our presidential nominee,” says Libertarian Party spokesperson Andrew Davis. “While Republicans and Democrats will fight for their own power in November, Libertarians will fight for Americans. Bob Barr is one of the strongest candidates in the Party’s 37-year history, and we look for him to have an enormous impact in the 2008 race. Republicans and Democrats have good reason to fear a candidate like Barr, who refuses to accept the ‘business-as-usual’ attitude of the current political establishment. Americans want and need another choice, and that choice is Bob Barr.”

 Now the question will be whether or not the Libertarians can mount any type of substantial effort this election cycle, especially as one of the most famous Libertarians is campaigning for President as a Republican.  If Libertarians don’t make a bigger dent on the election cycle soon, we may all be looking to trade in our passport and find a more hospitable country.  Personally, I’ve fought to hard on the place to give up, but there are many Americans that will continue to wander.

After returning from the holidays, I was able to catch up with a Tivo’d version of Meet the Press.  Tim Russert interviewed Ron Paul and after the interview, I realized that Ron Paul did actually seem like a decent candidate for President despite his Libertarian - Republican views.  Ron Paul gave up on the Republican Party and ran for President as a Libertarian in 1988.  He then came back to the party as a Representative and picked up where he left off.

Ron Paul has raised a very impressive amount of money and it actually seems to be based on his ideas and practical sounding solutions.  He seems to be attracting money from people normally viewed as independents or moderates and he seems to be crossing many lines of sex, race and economic levels.

Here were some of the views that I gleamed from the interview:

• The US should not go to war unless the Congress Declares War.

• That’s how it is in the Constitution

• Includes Germany, Japan and South Korea
• Also includes base in Saudi Arabia, which was one of the reasons why Al Qaeda attacked the US.

• Regulations should only exist at the State level.

• Ex. The British Government purchased all slaves from slave owners and then released them.

• Now, by his argument that would seem to include ending the practice of say separate restrooms for whites and blacks, which sounds ludicrous to me on the surface.  I suspect that there may however be a flaw in the legislation that was the result of some compromise and that it is this flaw that Paul is referring to as opposed to the result that the law achieved despite any existing flaws.
