The Clintons, Telemarketers and CNN Polling Scandal

Here is a fun one for all of you that remember the glory days of scandals in the White House that did not involve President Bush but instead involved Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Ahhhh, those were the days when scandals were only about money and sex and elections and political pandering and ohh the double talk.  Don’t you miss having a President capable of delivering double talk in a way that you almost buy it?

Well Newsbusters put together a nice little thread of stories highlighting a recent Clinton scandal that will probably follow Hillary Clinton all the way into the White House just like white water and Jennifer Flowers followed her and her fun loving and always loving husband.

It would seem that since leaving office as President, Bill received a nice fat check from an Iowa telemarketing firm totalling $200k.  He’s been on their payroll ever since.

That same company is now being linked by authorities in Iowa to criminal activity that has put the identity information of thousands of people into the hands of criminals.

Let that concept sink in for a second.  Al Gore invented the internet and Bill Clinton works for a company that is linked to internet identity theft.

Now isn’t that ironic, but not as ironic as the next part!

This same company purchased the polling company that CNN will now use as they go into the 2008 ellection.

Think about that for a second.

A company accused of sharing information from their telemarketing databases with identity thieves, now owns the polling company that CNN will use from now on into the 2008 election in which Hillary Clinton is running for President, and Bill Clinton works for that same company!

WOW!  That’s a scandal just waiting to blow up.  You would think that Bill Clinton would resign from the company or at least stop accepting the checks, possibly even return the money.  After all is it really appropriate for the company that owns the polling company that will collect, analyze and provide polling results to CNN, which will then broadcast those results around the world, is it ethical for that company to employ the spouse of one of the people most likely to benefit from a positive poll???

I’ll trade you one Presidential Paron for an Election!

We’re not talking Monopoly here.  People and companies can’t just start bartering presidential elections for presidential pardons for being an accomplice to identity theft now can they?

Well, unfortunately they can.  All that needs to happen is that the investigation needs to get dragged out until the end of President Hillary Clinton’s 2nd term, then she can swoop in and pardon the company or persons convicted and possibly the same persons that helped her receive those powers in the first place.

Is a Moratorium on Presidential Pardons Becoming Necessary?

The more I think about it, the more I think Congress should take a look at curbing the powers of the President’s ability to pardon prisoners. I think they should look at removing the pardon for the last year a President is in office.

Anyone that might be eligible or need a Presidential pardon after the seventh year of a President’s term would have to wait for one of the following:

  • the next president,
  • Approval by the Congress,

As an alternate if the pardon were to take place after the seventh year of a President’s term Congress could be given veto power over it. If it involves a death Row case the president could stay in execution but did not provide a full pardon. The full pardon can only be provided by the incoming new president later on down the road.

Presidential pardons seem to be subject of too much abuse. When Presidents, and most of them seem to have done it in recent decades, pardon somebody on the last day they are in office, it allows them to pardon people that have provided political help to the President.

Several presidents have been accused of selling presidential pardons even in the last couple of decades. This just doesn’t seem to be the proper usage of this tool of Presidential pardons.

This process needs more oversight in that last year. I say the last year because during the early years of the Presidency, a president that provides a presidential pardon will have to pay a high amount of political capital to perform that function. If there is not a good reason for the pardon the President will likely pay for it in Congress or come the next election cycle.
