• electing new leaders for the next Congress
• Economic Stimulus Package debate
• Expelling Ted Stevens
• Punishing Joe Lieberman by stripping him of his chairmanship or water boarding (which ever hurts Democrats politically the least)
• Saving or Incinerating the US Carmaker industry

Whatever happens there will definitely be a lot of fighting and it won’t be over something safe like steroids in base ball, or executive pay for financial firm CEOs or diet pill relief for super models.

The election is over and everyone is safe for 2 – 6 years and they are going to act like it for a change as they prepare to come out fighting…

The Alaska Supreme Court this week gave U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens some breathing room as he attempts to defend his law license from suspension, giving him until Nov. 24 to prepare a defense to a bar disciplinary proceeding.

On Oct. 30, three days after a District of Columbia jury found him guilty of seven felonies for lying on his annual Senate disclosure statements, the Alaska Bar Association asked the state Supreme Court for an immediate, interim suspension of Stevens’ license to practice law.

As anyone that has ever read a John Grisham novel knows, having a law license in prison is worth its weight in gold labeled cigarettes.  Helping himself to get back out of jail will likely be his first priority, as it definitely looks like he’s going to have a hard time avoiding those 6 or 7 guilty felony counts against him. 

Plus, it might even allow him to earn a few bucks (or at least home improvement credits from his new best buddies), which is most certainly better than spending his online hour writing Hydroxycut reviews for a few extra bucks.  Fortunately for the senator the Russian Mobile Prison system has not yet caught on in Alaska, even though it does make for entertaining reality tv on local cable access broadcasts.

“Why do we have to do this today?”Viktor I. Ilyukhin, a Communist legislator, said during discussions Friday in the State Duma, the lower house of Parliament. “Why are we in such a hurry? A strict authoritarian regime has already been established in this country. There is already an unprecedented concentration of power in one person’s hands.”

Political opposition leaders have been harshly critical of the proposed change, which is almost assured of becoming law, but opposition parties have little presence in the Duma, and on Friday, the Communists were virtually the only dissenters.

In the end, the bill sailed through its first reading in the Duma, passing by a vote of 388 to 58.

Even if Putin is doing this to set himself up for a return to power as President, an office he controls indirectly through a puppet with the stage name and title of ‘President’.

Is Putin just making crazy demands to show that he can make them like a rock star gone crazy in a hotel or a dictator in North Korea demanding customized equestrian riding apparel fashioned into a rotund sized uniform like get up that would fit right in on the Star Ship Enterprise???

1. Push a person or group out of their comfort zone
2. Take away their resources and escape plans
3. Then give them just a little bit to get buy and avoid total collapse

One and two have happened for millions of Americans already as they suffered the 1, 2 and 3 punches of Real Estate Value collapse, Unemployment, and Credit Evaporation.

The government provides an old fashioned and mostly broken unemployment system that rarely covers most newly unemployed individuals, but for those that it does cover, it doesn’t really provide enough assistance to buy groceries and gas let alone cover a house payment or car payment or any other bills.

So Barack Obama is calling on Congress to extend the paltry unemployment benefits of Americans that will lose them in the next couple of months. 

President-elect Barack Obama urged Congress to extend unemployment benefits as part of a “down payment” on a U.S. economic rescue plan as world leaders meet in Washington today to fight the global recession.

Extended assistance “for the more than 1 million Americans who will have exhausted their unemployment insurance by the end of this year” is an immediate priority, Obama said in the Democratic Party’s weekly radio address.

Its a nice-nice effort, but not going to make life better for anyone really.  It will not put anyone back in a job.  It will not even cover most bills, debts or necessities.  In reality it is less of a ‘down payment’ on the US rescue plan as it is an interest only payment.

Its also a nice sound bite, and business as usual as far as political tricks go.  Unfortunately, it won’t do anyone any good.  :(  People would get just as little out of this as spending their lass dime in Vegas on a slot machine, in fact go for it, you might have better odds with the house in vegas than you will from the White House of GWB or BHO.  Make your las vegas hotel reservations today, because tomorrow we’ll all be in the poor house if our leadership doesn’t come up with some better efforts than they have shown so far.

They set the wrong agenda.  See if you can spot the flaw in their leadership logic…

World leaders convened Saturday for a second straight day hoping to tackle a financial crisis that has ricocheted across the globe and left the United States and other countries on the brink of deep recessions.

Their goal: to prevent a similar calamity from happening again.

The historic two-day summit meeting, which brought together prime ministers and presidents from Group of 20 countries, was in full swing Saturday following an extravagant working dinner at the White House.

This is supposedly a once per century problem.  A problem that we have not yet survived and they are looking into plans to figure out how to avoid it next century?

Hello!  Leaders of the world, I’ve got a news flash for you.  How about you confront the problem we have today.  The problem that your poor leadership could not avoid.  How about you chart us a path out of this problem instead of pretending we don’t have a problem now.

I realize many of you already have the shipping boxes open on your office desks and you are hoping to high tail it to the nearest possible remote location away from the future turmoil, but you are still in a position of power.  Is it too much to ask for some last minute game play here?

Obama again decided to choose a person from a group of people very close to him.  He opted for Valerie Jarrett, a former Daley chief of staff and a former employer of Michelle Obama.

Before joining The Habitat Co., Jarrett served for eight years in government for the city of Chicago, Illinois. She was deputy corporation counsel for finance and development, then deputy chief of staff for Mayor Richard M. Daley and finally became commissioner of the Department of Planning and Development.

Jarrett met Barack Obama when she hired Michelle Obama for a job in the Chicago mayor’s office years ago and has been very close to the two ever since.

Let’s hope the Obama team shows the ability to actually execute a successful hiring process sometime soon instead of just picking from the people in the next room.  They do deserve credit for getting him elected, but that doesn’t mean they know beans about running a country.

Bill Clinton was soundly thumped in 92 and 93 for picking Arkansas cronies that like Obama’s team didn’t know much about the White House.  That culminated in giving power to the Republicans in Congress to check a rookie White House team.

America is in more dire straights these days and we really need to see Obama pick something closer to the dream team right from go as opposed to selecting everyone that ever did him and his daughter’s mother’s mother a favor by referring them to a New York Moving Company back when a certain piano needed to be moved from x to y to z  .. . . yada yada yada. 

Obama needs to get his transition team to actually do some interviews as opposed to agreeing amongst themselves on a plan to split the spoils of war.
