The projections on the Democratic side of New Jersey can not yet be called. The reporting numbers so far show that Hillary Clinton is leading Obama in New Jersey but the numbers are still very very early and can not be finalized yet.

Sharpe James was the incumbent Mayor of Newark New Jersey for 20 years. He had been an incumbent city council member for 16 years before that. He was also a state Senator for New Jersey, serving from 1999 and he is still a state Senator today.

Apparently, it is legal for a person to serve as both mayor and state senator at the same time, but that is beyond my understanding. Seems like there would be a conflict of interest both from the perspective of legislature v. executive and State v. local.

Federal Investigators through a grand jury have brought an indictment against James for corruption and enabling another person to defraud the government out of $500,000. James is accused of using his city credit card to spend thousands of dollars on himself, including trips to Florida and passage in a penthouse on a cruise ship.

He also enabled his companion Tamika Riley allegedly to purchase property from the city for paltry sums of money. In one example she purchased a lot for $6k and sold it for $155k 3 months later.

Tamika was also arrested by the FBI.

Baffling Incumbency Demands Change in Newark and New Jersey

No one has been convicted in this situation yet, however, it definitely appears that James abused his power. At a minimum New Jersey and Newark should consider instituting controls to limit the terms of incumbents and prevent a politician from holding more than one office.

If we keep the incumbents in office, we are just voting for the same thing - pork spending, corruption and government waste! Become informed about who represents you and then make a change!

Don’t be a defeatist! Vote! Even if your candidate does not win, you are sending a message that you are not happy with the winner!

Polls are not always right. A study completed in 1989 showed that 82% of the undecideds voted for the challenger. Your vote may count more than you think it does. If you are voting the incumbent out - get out and do it! Your vote is NEVER wasted!
